这种书有何用？--Use the Right Word摘抄系列之终结篇

表达五官“变形”而产生的表情，有：frown,皱眉；grimace,做鬼脸；pout,撅嘴；scowl,怒目而视。

其反义词是smile.

表达“有经验的、成熟的、完美的”之类含义，有：full-fledged，羽翼已丰的、训练完备的；seasoned,经验丰富的；finished,完成了的，隐含“圆满、漂亮”的意思；perfected,完美的，强调“完全掌握”了。

其反义词有：immature, inexperienced,raw, undeveloped, unfledged, unseasoned.

表达“推进、贯彻实施”之类含义，有：further,推进，情感色彩为中性；push,不太正式的说法；advance,促进、推进，强调有意识的、有决断的努力；contribute,出力，做贡献，强调所贡献的是次要因素；implement,实施，该词是个“胖”词，可用于政府事务、社会活动等多方面。

其反义词有：delay, hinder,prevent, side track.

后记：Use the Right Word这本书我未能全部看完，只看到以f打头的词这部分，如本文的frown、full-fledged、further，也就是说，只看了全书不到四分之一的内容。但只是依据这些内容，我已经写了37篇短博文。

我在该系列的第一期介绍说：

Use the Right Word: Modern Guideto Synonyms and Related Words（读者文摘编辑部，1982年出版）是我约30年前在某图书馆工具书阅览室发现的一本好书，讲解英语同义词、近义词的微妙区别。本书主要作者是S. I. Hayakawa（1906-1992），出生于加拿大的日裔美国学者，在日本古代史研究方面颇有建树。他本行是英语教授，1977-1983期间，他担任过代表加州的国会参议员。

由于该书放在工具书阅览室，自然就不允许外借，我就一趟一趟地跑阅览室，做了很多摘抄。下面与大家分享一部分摘抄笔记。

我猜测，这位S. I. Hayakawa先生是会日语的。当掌握了一种语言的人来审视另一种语言的时候，就会想到被审视语言的native speaker想不到的一些问题，因为他们从某种意义上说是旁观者，而旁观者清。因此我猜测，若是纯英美人来写这本书，恐怕还写不出这样的水平。同样的道理，日本学者白川静对汉字的认识，也常有超出我们中国学者的别开生面的认识，见我两年前的2月9日写的博文《“天生我才必有用”别解》（http://blog.sciencenet.cn/blog-1557-535539.html）。

即使我们不读Use the Right Word这样的书，也不会影响我们的英语表达能力。事实上，很多英美人也搞不清这些同义词的区别，在生活中也确实没有必要搞清这些区别。因此，我们主要从欣赏的角度来阅读这样的书。正好比，我们在日常生活中没有必要使用太多的成语，用得太多反而会招人厌，但这不妨碍我们坐下来仔细阅读一个又一个成语的源流和典故，因为那是一份非凡的愉悦享受。
