[Special Issue on Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer in Complicated Subsurface Porous/Fractured Geomaterials]

Call for Papers

The subsurface geomaterials are characterized as porous or fractured porous media. Understanding the fluid flow and heat transfer behavior in porous or fractured porous media is critical to geoenergy technologies that utilize favourable geological conditions to store or extract fluids from the subsurface through a variety of engineering fields (e.g. pollute transport, petroleum engineering, carbon sequestration, and geothermal engineering). We have made great progress in numerical simulation and experimental approaches for porous or fractured porous media research in last decades. Many techniques have been applied for model reconstruction, including SEM and CT imaging, thin-section analysis, core sampling, drilling data, well logging and seismic data, 3D printing etc. Various numerical methods including the finite element method (FEM) based on the variation principle and weighted residual method, boundary element method (BEM), element-free galerkin method (EFM), discrete element method (DEM), and neural network method (NNM) have been used to simulate the heat and mass transfer processes.

All these technologies presented above can help us understand the complicated mechanisms related to mass transport and heat transfer in complicated fractured porous media. However, it is still a challenging task due to the strong heterogeneity and anisotropy of subsurface geomaterials. In viewing of the improved experimental methods, model construction and different numerical methods for issues of mass and heat transfer in porous and fractured porous media, we are organizing this Special Issue to provide a chance for exchanging new insights and addressing the present challenges of fluid flow and heat transfer in porous and fractured porous media related to various geosciences and geomechanics fields.

In this special issue, we especially welcome submissions that involve current challenges and potential applications of improved numerical methods on modeling of fluid flow and heat transfer in porous and fractured porous media, as well as experimental validation. We welcome both original research and review articles in these areas.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

● Porous and fractured porous media characterization and model construction

● Complicated seepage issues related to pollutant transport, petroleum engineering, carbon sequestration, geothermal engineering, etc.

● Experimental investigation on mass and heat transfer in porous and fractured porous geomaterials

● Advantages and limits of various numerical methods applied in mass and heat transfer in porous and fractured porous media

Submission Deadline

January 31, 2021

Publication Date

May 31, 2021

Papers are published upon acceptance, regardless of the Special Issue publication date.

The Special Issue Instruction

Submission of your article to JPM special issue: Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer in Complicated Subsurface Porous/Fractured Geomaterials

Below are complete instructions for authors to submit to the special issue.

In order to process your article, you will first need to register or log in on the Begell House Submission system as an author. To register or log in, please go to the following link:

http://submission.begellhouse.com/usr/login.html?prod_code=journals

If you have never submitted an article before, you will need to click the “Register” link and fill out the registration form. On the form, be sure to click the circle next to “Submission authors.” Please also enter your complete first and last name; registrations with incomplete names will be rejected. You will receive a verification email and will be able to log onto the submission system normally.

Once you are logged in, you will be brought to the “Author’s Home” page. If any articles need your attention, they will be listed here.

To submit an article, click on the green “Submit an article” button. This will bring you to a screen where you can select the journal to which you would like to submit (pick Journal of Porous Media), as well as enter the title, key words and abstract of the article. You will also have the option on this screen to select one of the open access models or the free subscription model. More information about our open access policies can be found at http://www.begellhouse.com/open_access/. When you have entered this information, click “Next.”

If you have chosen one of the open access options, you will need to fill out and upload the open access agreement form. If you choose the Gold Open Access option, you will additionally need to make an online payment. The price varies for each journal.

On the next screen, you will be asked to enter the information for the authors of this article. Please be sure to enter the information accurately, as this information will automatically appear on the “forthcoming articles” page later in the production process. When you have entered this information, click “Next.”

Your article has been created, but is currently in the DRAFT stage. You will see a screen with several tabs, including one marked “Files.” This screen contains a button that says “Add files.” If you click on that, you can select your article files and upload them to the site. Once you select your files, you will see them appear in the files list, with two new buttons to the right that say “Start” and “Cancel.” Press “Start” to upload the files.

While your article is in DRAFT, no one else will see it or do anything with it. In order to move it forward, you will need to click on the “Main” tab. There you will see options that include “Submit” and “Submit to Special Issue.” If you click “Submit to Special Issue,” you will be brought to a new screen with a drop-down list that will allow you to select the available special issues. Choose the issue marked “Special Issue: Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer in Complicated Subsurface Porous/Fractured Geomaterials.”

The next screen also contains a link to the Begell House copyright form. You must click “I agree with copyright form” to continue. There is also space for you to add any notes about your article that you may want the editor/guest editor to see. After you have completed this form, click the “Submit” or the “Submit to Special Issue” button. Your article will be sent to the editor and its new state will be “SUBMITTED.”

If you encounter any difficulty, please contact journals@begellhouse.com. We will help you to log in and will also answer any questions pertaining to your submission.
