Barry J. Marshall(1951年9月30日~)澳大利亚科学家，与罗宾·沃伦(J. Robin Warren)发现了幽门螺杆菌(Helicobacter pylori，Hp)以及这种细菌在胃炎和胃溃疡等疾病中的作用，被授与2005年诺贝尔生理或医学奖。2011年，被评为中国工程院外籍院士。http://baike.so.com/doc/5612512-5825122.html
20世纪中叶，大多数医生认为胃溃疡是由于焦虑，辛辣食物或酸性物质过多引起的，而只能通过卧床休息，防酸片治疗，实在不行就要手术治疗。
然而在1979年，澳大利亚病理学家Robin Warren做胃组织炎症活检时发现出现有微小弯曲的细菌菌落存在。
另一位澳洲医生Barry Marshall得讯后和他联系组队，两人进行了100例胃溃疡活检。
他们的研究结果表明，细菌是导致胃溃疡和胃炎的原因，他们把这种细菌命名为幽门螺旋杆菌，但持怀疑态度的医学界认为他们的证据还不够充分。
因为没有动物适合作为人类这种疾病研究的替代模型，Barry 勇敢地喝下了含有细菌的培养液。五天后，他失去了胃口，然后每天早晨呕吐。内窥镜检查发现，他确实染上胃炎。Barry 然后开始一个疗程的抗生素，症状消失 (幽门螺旋杆菌引发胃溃疡，长期发展会导致胃癌几率大大提高。所以要及时治疗）。
