A Plea To Young Readers for Help 

I am appealing to young scholars and readers of my blog. Please
 help me spread the message below:

The blog publishing scene in China currently is very chaotic.
Literally, ANYTHING GOES. While this is intrinsically good for
 a democratic society. One nevertheless needs to observe some
 elementary rules of behavior. For otherwise, civilized discussion
 and societal progress will be impossible. After all, we all want a 
“harmonious society”. I believe this is especially important for 
ScienceNet. It is a platform of high standards and genuine learning
 for every body. It is also the primary reason I decided to blog on 
and only on this platform (see my article:

Recently, however, I discovered a common
 practice in blogging in China that is
 contrary to all accepted behavior in rest 
of the world regarding authorship, 
intellectual property and source
 attribution. This is the problem,
 particularly among young bloggers. If they
 find some writings and/or articles on the
 www they liked, they will go ahead post
 such writing or articles on their own blog
 page without indication of source,
 authorship, and attribution. Whatever
 intention or purpose they have in doing
 this, the end result, intended or not, is
 that this has become THEIR contribution.
 When it was pointed out to them that this
 is unacceptable, their
 explanations/response are
1. Everyone does it in China (My response is
 that if everyone is corrupt it does not 
mean you should be corrupt also. Some 
ethical rules are absolute.)
2. What is the big deal? This is not 
plagiarism. I simply want to help publicize
 this article I happen to like (If that is
 the case, adding an attribution of source
 or authorship require only a sentence or a
 few word. What is your excuse for not doing
 it?)
3. I do what I like on my blog and you are
 not going to tell me what can and cannot be
 done. (Theoretically you are free to do
 what you please so long as your freedom
 does not infringe upon others. In this
 case, good blogger will simply stop 
publication of useful or valuable 
information on their blog pages. I certainly
 will not contribute articles to where
 intellectual property rights and authorship
 are not respected. The loser will simply be
 the rule -respecting youth of China.
4. I’ll simply ignore you.  (I hope and know
 that unlike you, most youths of China are
 ethical and obey the rules.) 

The editorial office of ScienceNet has
 previous issued a notice advising blogger
 about this. Everyone who read it support
 the requirement of attribution and listing

I know most of you young scholars/readers know these
 rules of proper behavior. Certainly all my students in 
Tsinghua are taught this way.  My plea is that you make
 the above simple rules of accepted behavior and URLs
 known to your friends and compatriots who may not be
 aware or cynical. Among all the problems in this 
complex world, let us take this small step to make 
ScienceNet a place of high standard, a place we all
 admire, and a place we can learn from each other.

 and you want the next generation of Chinese scholars
 to take their rightful place in the world, help spread the
 word and enforce the rules.

然而，最近我发现，在关于作者、知识产权和注明出处的问题上，中国的博客现状与世界上任何其它地方都相互抵触。这个问题在年轻的博主中间尤其严重。一旦他们发现互联网上有什么他们喜欢的文章，不管三七二十一，直接就把该文章贴在自己的博客中，而不注明来源、作者和出处。不管他们这样做是出于什么目的，最后有意无意造成的印象都是这是他们自己写的东西。要是别人指出这样做不对，他们还振振有词，最常见的反应和辩解有以下几种：
 
1. 在中国人人都这么做。（我的回答是，即使人人都堕落，也不意味着你也应该跟着一起堕落。有些道德准则是不容商量的。）
 
2. 有什么大惊小怪的？这不算剽窃，我只不过是在帮助宣传这篇东西，而这篇东西我恰巧喜欢罢了。（如果你是这样想的话，只要用一句短短的话或者几个词就能标明原作者和出处。你为什么不这么做呢？你的借口是什么？）
 
3. 我的博客我说了算，我爱怎么样就怎么样，你别想对我指手画脚。（理论上，只要你不侵犯他人的利益，你确实想怎么样就怎么样。但是如果纵容那种做法，优秀的博主就不会再发表有用的有价值的信息。就我本人而言，我是肯定不会给知识产权和原作者不被尊重的地方投稿的。最后受损失的是那些遵守规则的中国年轻人。）
 
4. 我干脆对你的抗议置之不理。（我希望，而且也知道，大多数中国年轻人和你不一样，是有道德讲规矩的。）
