翻译“锤炼”式练习（二）

例11：Criminals wouldn’t go around with identification  cards on their foreheads.

译文：罪犯又不会把身份证贴在脑门上。

注：Go around, 走来走去, 在这里不必译出，因为译出则反而冲淡了语气。原文用with这个介词表示贴，故必须有个动词，用了go around, 中文已经有了动词“贴”，就可以了。顺便说一句，若把“坏人也不会把名字刻在脸上”译成英文，用以上句型，则很地道。

例12：It can feel so real that it curls your hair.

如此逼真，使你毛骨悚然。

注：此处利用成语，很贴切。

例13:I liked coffee and she liked tea,

     And that was the reason we couldn’t agree.

译文：萝卜青菜，各人喜爱，所以我和她意见合不来。

注：此句很容易理解，但原文押韵，译文最好也押韵。

例14：Providence will prevail.

(这是美国首任总统华盛顿信服的一句口号)

译文：天道必行。

注：利用了中文的固有说法。

例15：An ethical person ought to do more than he’s required to do and less than he’s allowed to do.

译文：有德者的当行范围，应比要求于他的要大，应比其允许做的要小。

注：如果译文中不加上“范围”二字，则很难处理，或者译文的表达会很罗嗦。

例16：The poet Joseph Brodsky said that you can tell a great deal more about a candidate for the presidency from the last book he read than the last speech he gave.

译文：诗人约瑟夫. 布罗斯基说，从一个总统候选人最近读了一本什么样的书可看出的东西，远比从他最近一次演讲可看出的东西要多。

注：原文中的You可以不译。

例17: Omar, when asked how to deal with the library after he occupied Alexandria, replied, “If the books agree with the Koran, they are not necessary and may be burned. If they disagree with the Koran, they are pernicious and must be burned. ”

译文：奥马尔攻占亚历山大里亚后，被问及如何处置图书馆的藏书，他说，“如果这些书与古兰经一致，那就是多余的了，可以烧掉；如果与古兰经不一致，那就是有害的了，必须烧掉。

注：奥马尔的话是排比句式，所以尽量翻译为排比句式。

例18：Scientific insight and inspiration stem from empathy, feelings, dreams, vision or more simply, what Max Planck (himself a concert-calibre pianist) has called the “artistically creative imagination”.

译文：科学顿悟与灵感来自设身处地的体验，来自感情，来自梦境，来自洞察，或简而言之，来自马克斯. 普朗克所说的“像艺术家一般无拘无束的想象力。

注：artistically creative imagination最难处理，字面上意思是“艺术地创造性的想象力”，这样的中文很别扭。由于artistic总与艺术家相关，“创造”隐含着无拘无束的意思，思考了很久，才确定了现在的译法，比较满意。

例19: Research is to teaching as sin is to confession. If you don’t participate in the former, you have very little to say in the latter.

译文：研究之于教学，一如罪孽之于忏悔。如果没有前者，于后者亦无话可说。

注：1、主语可以不译。2、中文可以说参与研究，但不说参与忏悔，故不采用“参与”这个词。

例20：The borderline between confidence and arrogance is as indistinct as that between apathy and calmness or complacency and contentment.

译文：自信与自负之间的界限很难划，正如从容与冷漠、知足与自满之间的界限不好划一样。

注：confidence and arrogance，褒义词在前，贬义词在后，可是后面两组词，却是贬义词在前，我没有拘泥于原文词序，一律将褒义词放在前面。

例21：All political lives, unless they are cut off in midstream at a happy juncture, end in failure, because that is the nature of politics and of human affairs.

译文：所有政治生命，除非在春风得意的当口急流勇退，都将以失败告终，因为政治的本性就是如此，人类事务的本性就是如此。

注：译文用了两个成语，自己觉得还算贴切，不牵强。
