Germanium is an effective catalyst for the growth of highly aligned, closely packed polycrystalline Al₂O₃ and amorphous SiO₂ nanowire bunches. The Ge-catalyzed nanowire growth exhibits interesting growth behavior not observed in conventional Au-catalyzed nanowire growth.
