励志人物:美国盲人古生物学家Geerat J. Vermeij教授 (1946--)
美国加州大学戴维斯分校地球和行星科学系的前身为“地质系”。目前，该系有一位痴迷现生和化石贝壳(shells)的杰出教授Geerat Jacobus Vermeij (1946--) [Distinguished Professor, Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences, UC Davis]。他是当代著名的古生物学家(paleontologist)、软体动物学家(malacologist)、海洋生态学家(marine ecologist)和进化生物学家(evolutionary biologist)。Geerat J. Vermeij于1968年和1971年先后从普林斯顿大学和耶鲁大学获得学士及博士学位；1992年荣获麦克阿瑟“天才奖”(MacArthur Fellow)；2000年荣获美国科学院颁发的“Daniel Giraud Elliott” 奖。然而，你无法想像--Geerat J. Vermeij是一位盲人！也许你会疑问：一个盲人怎么可能成为古生物学家呢？

∮1 古生物学
一般来说，古生物学研究离不开双眼。从事古生物学研究的人经常走进大自然，开展艰苦的野外工作，采集尽可能多的标本或样品，获取大量第一手资料。严谨的标本鉴定离不开学术文献和细心观察。古生物学家不仅对标本开展一般形态学(gross morphology)观察，而且利用先进的仪器设备开展多学科多手段的实验分析以获取丰富的生物学和地层学等信息，进而开展深入的比较和整合研究。

生活常识告诉我们：像古生物学这样的观察和实验学科对于盲人来说是极其困难的。可是，Geerat J. Vermeij的经历和成功是世界古生物学发展历史上的一个传奇和神话！
∮2 盲人古生物学家Geerat J. Vermeij
----1946年9月28日Geerat Jacobus Vermeij出生于荷兰东北部的Sappemeer【Sappemeer属于Groningen】。父亲是Johannes Lodewijk Vermeij (1915--？？)，母亲是Aaltje Hindrika Engelina Smith (1912--？？)，哥哥是Arie Pieter (1945--)。Geerat Jacobus Vermeij很不幸，他天生患有青光眼病症（glaucoma），出生后的3年多时间几乎是在Groningen和Utrecht的医院度过的。
----1947年Geerat Jacobus Vermeij 在 Groningen就诊时, 他的家人搬迁到Gouda居住；
----1950年6月医生给Geerat Jacobus Vermeij做了双眼摘除手术。3岁多的Geerat Jacobus Vermeij从此永远失明；
----1950年秋，手术之后，4周岁之前，开始入学离Gouda约有50公里的一所小学校-The Prins Alexanderstichting；
----1951年，5岁，入学盲人学校—The Institute for the Blind at Huizen；
----1955年，9岁。该年8--9月全家从荷兰移民到美国新泽西州定居；开始学习英文版布莱叶盲文（The contracted version of English Braille）；入读牛顿小学（Newton Elementary School, Sussex County）3年级，进入有25年教龄的Mrs. Ruth Saplow的班级[注：在美国小学，如果某个年级的学生较多，会分成小班教学，每个班会有一个固定教室(Home classroom)和负责教师（类似中国大陆的班主任老师），每个孩子会有一个固定的小课桌。此时，Geerat Jacobus Vermeij所在的班级可称“Mrs. Saplow’s class”。中学的教学方式与小学是不一样的] ；
----1956年四年级老师Mrs. Caroline Colberg激发Geerat Jacobus Vermeij对贝壳的兴趣；
----1961年春，在哥哥Arie和母亲的陪同下，第一次访问了纽约的美国自然历史博物馆(The American Museum of Natural History, NYC)，专门拜访软体动物学家，“看看”该博物馆的贝壳等标本；
----1964年，入学普林斯顿大学，成为当时普林斯顿大学唯一的盲人学生；[Geerat J. Vermeij在1997年的自传里提及当时普林斯顿大学古植物学家Erling Dorf (1905--1984)]

----1971年从耶鲁大学生物系毕业，博士学位(Ph.D.degree, Yale University)，年仅25岁；其博士学位论文的英文题目是--“Morphological Patterns in High Intertidal Gastropods（腹足类）: An Essay on Adaptive Strategies and their Limitations”；
----1971年秋担任马里兰大学动物系教员(instructor of the Dept of Zoology, Universityof Maryland, College Park)，试用；
----1971年获得美国国家科学基金(National Science Foundation)$21,000项目资助；同年9月，聘请助手Bettina Dudley；
----1972年2月工作岗位由马里兰大学动物系的试用教员(instructor)转变为正式的助理教授；
----1972年10月与犹太姑娘、研究生同学Edith Zipser在耶鲁大学的一个教堂（Yale’s Harkness Chapel）结婚；

Geerat J. Vermeij的研究对象主要是海洋中现代和化石软体动物。但是他的研究工作涉及到热带地区的木质藤本植物(liana/liane)。1976年，Geerat J. Vermeij和普里斯顿大学的同事合作研究了木质藤本植物叶片的大小和形状，论文发表在有名的《美国博物学家》杂志(American Naturalist)，参见：

Geerat J. Vermeij教授著述甚丰，他是一位高产的科学家。他的科学成就是让人敬畏的。
∮4 科学励志走向成功
Geerat J. Vermeij从小志向远大，对大自然充满着好奇心。在过去的半个多世纪里，Geerat J. Vermeij开展了大量的野外工作，采集了很多标本，用他的双手观察标本！他对于科学研究一以贯之，沉潜于学术数十年，取得了很多学术成果。Geerat J. Vermeij对科学的痴迷和执着是可歌可泣的，是可敬可佩的。
我觉得，Geerat J.Vermeij的父亲是一位有眼光(vision)的父亲。1955年秋，Vermeij全家从荷兰移民到美国新泽西州定居，这是很重要的事情。如果没有美国的社会保障体制和教育体制，Geerat J. Vermeij几乎不可能成为古生物学家。即便如此，Geerat J. Vermeij曾面临种种困难，因为人们怀疑一个盲人贝壳爱好者可以成为一名科学家。盲人委员会的政府官员起初拒绝提供专门经费--雇请读者帮助Geerat J. Vermeij在普林斯顿大学学习生物学。在Geerat J. Vermeij获得耶鲁大学博士学位后，马里兰大学动物系仅给他提供一个试用职位(trial position)!
尽管Geerat J.Vermeij已成为一名卓越的古生物学家，但我认为他的成功似乎是难以复制的。不过，我深信，Geerat J. Vermeij自强不息的奋斗精神和卓越成就不仅可以激励广大盲人朋友不畏困难、乐观向前，而且可以鞭策视力健全朋友珍惜时光、发奋进取。
