Professor Wang Hong Fei, well known to readers of these pages,  and I have never met. 


We are in completely different fields of endeavor and born in different generations. But 


we share some common views and opinions about the nature of science and technology, 


its administration and policy, and love for China. Ordinarily we probably would go 


through our lives never have known or heard of each other. But through the modern 


miracle of the Internet and the Chinese Science Net Blog pages, we become aware of 


each other and our common interest since I started here four months ago. It is also by 


lucky accident that I found out in time that he will be attending the American chemical 


Society biannual meeting in Boston this week. Through e-mails, we arrange to meet for 


the first time on August 20. 


He, his student Rao Li, and myself spend a enjoyable lunch and afternoon visit to the 


Minuteman National Historical Park (of the American Revolution) in Lexington and 


Concord, Massachusetts. We found out that we actually have several mutual friends and 


acquaintances (separated only by one hop in connection, i.e., I know someone who 


knows him). This is another illustration that everyone in the world is connected by 


maximal six degree of separation. Hooray for globalization and modern technology!
