Chinese American financial donations to US Universities.

My good friend and fraternity brother, C.F. Kwok, wrote the following self explanatory letter in connectiuon with his research about financial donations by Chinese Americans to U.S. Universities. This I post below unedited. Y.C.Ho

Dear Friends,

A few months ago,in the Washington Post, I read a very interesting article about a Hong Kong family who made a large donation to two US universities in 2014.  Mr. T H Chan donated $350M to the Harvard School of Public Health.  Mrs. T H Chan and son donated $20M to the Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at the University of Southern California.  The universities named two buildings after them.

I am very pleased to see Chinese American donor names on university buildings, museums and hospitals.  I am happy and proud of their thoughts and actions.  I would like to collect and disseminate the names of donors to U.S. universities, especially to inspire the younger generations to admire and to give generously back to society.   With the help from a few friends and the  book "Chinese  & Chinese Americans Philanthropy", I have assembled a list of 40 donors and their contributions to 50 universities.

Here are some samples entries on my list:

HARVARD    T H Chan School of Public Health

TH (Tseng Hai) CHAN  (1923-1986) from Guangdong and Hong Kong.  He was an executive of Hang Lung Group, a Hong Kong Real Estate development firm.

His son Dr. Gerald Chan, SM'74 SM '79, toured the school with his father. Each year there are more than 400 faculty members who teach 1000 full time students.

His father was impressed and donated $350M unrestricted to the school and for scholarships in 2014.  The Chan family also supports universities in China.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA      Mrs T H Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy Building

Ronnie Chan of Hong Kong, alumni and trustee of USC donated $20M in 2014 in honor of his mother with a building in her name.

Mr. Chan and wife Barbara established the China Initiative partnership with Peking University and developed a graduate program in occupational therapy.  They fund the restoration of 24 buildings in the Palace of Established happiness within the Forbidden City.

UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND         Professorship and endowments

Patrick Sung, MS '69, PhD in Chemical Engineering '72 and Marguerite Yang Sung BS in Math' 70.  Lead in Nu Skin Enterprise, donated many times to

the university.

Since 2011, Marguerite has donated , two to three awards per year for a Fellowship in Mathematics in Department of  Mathematics.  In 2016, she donated $.5M to  the College of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Science Department to endow graduate research fellows in mathematics.

Patrick donated $1.5M to establish the Patrick and Marguerite Sung Distinguished Professorship in the Chemical Engineering in Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Engineering.  This fund sponsors two professorships each year.

In 2018, they donated $2M to build and equip the Overlook Conference Room in A J Clark Hall, Benjamin Building.

In 2020, they established 3 endowed scholarships at $250,000 each for undergraduate students.

One scholarship is in Chemical Engineering in memory of Patrick's parents.

The second one is in Mathematics in memory of Marguerite's parents.

The third one is in the School of Business in memory of Sarah Burgess, their family help for 38 years.

The above is only samples of many kind gifts from 40.

If you would like to receive the full listing, please let me know.  I will send to you.

I hope my list will inspire people . I am sure, there are many more donors.

I have listed only donors to U.S. institution.  If you  know off additional donors, please let me know.

THANK YOU.
