I have written earlier (some five years ago) about buying the stock of APPLE in 1981 at $1/share (price adjusted for stock splits), and selling it at $3/share before the iPhone debut and congratulating myself for tripling my money. Today the APPLE stock close at $467/share and the company has become worth 2 Trillion dollars, a first in history anywhere in the world. May be this is sour grapes to say I am quite comfortable and happy in my retirement and do not regret the lost opportunity. But it does illustrate my own experience and advice on investment which I did not completely follow. So it is worth repeating here:

1.     Find a company whose product you know something about beyond just good financials. In 1981 I thought APPLE is very technically creative and has a good procut, The Macintosh computer. 

2.     Save your money and Buy the company stock,

3.     Hold onto your investment.

It is this last peice of advice I did not fully adhere to (If I did, it will be 467 times and not just 3 times). Let that be a lesson to ordinary and non professional investors like myself.
