More on being a technological dinosaur

Two technology gadgets that has pass me by

I have a quirky habit that started several decades ago: I find it annoying to have something tied on your wrist. As a result I never wear a wrist watch. I tried a pocket watch but find it too bulky. Thus, I just put a wristwatch in my pocket. After losing several wristwatches this way, I simply stop carrying watch of any kind on my person and find life goes on without any inconvenience. First of all, clocks are available almost anywhere: on your computer, your iPhone or iPad, in most rooms, on the GPS in your car. And as a last resort, you can always ask for time from any human being (since most people wear wrist watches)After retirement since I spend most of my life at home, the need for wristwatch completely disappeared. When I retired 19 years ago, my student gave me an expansive wristwatch as a gift which I appreciated greatly. But it sits in my bedroom drawer unused since I am even more afraid of losing it as have done several times before.

The other technology device I do not own is a smart phone or iPhone. Being retired I work mostly from home. And my desktop PC can do everything I want. Recently (see my previous blog) I lost my PC due a lightening strike. Recovery from the crash is still on going. But that is another story. Carrying an iPad during occasional travel is quite sufficient. Thus, as reported in the press, I share with Warren Buffet that we still use our flip top phone just to make phone calls. There is no need to carry a portable computer (i.e., a smart phone) on my person. However, as more and more commercial devices require the use of an iPhone, sometimes I do encounter inconveniences. But not often enough to be bothersome. At my age, I sincerely wish I can avoid the use of an iPhone is my lifetime . BTW, a few years back, my son did give us an iPhone 6 which we use exclusively for hiring Uber or Lyft taxis since we are now a one car family for over one year now.
