Importance of Brain Exercises as One Ages 精选

We have all been told of the importance of physical exercise. But at my age, I have seen the gradual decline of mental functions of many of my age cohorts (middle to late eighties). They begin to have memory problems; start to do strange or stupid things for an intelligent person (Claude Shannon, the father of information theory is the best knwon case); and generally fell silent in group conversations. It is sad and alarming to see such decline. For the past eight years I have been using a brain exercise website to do brain training. The exercises test and train your mental abilities along many dimensions: short and long term memories, attention ability, peripheral vision, mental calculation ability, quickness of decision, flexibility in thinking, et al. The best parts of the site are”

1.  The exercises are like electronic games you play and are entertaining.

2.  They get progressively harder as you train so that you are always challenged.

3.  They keep score of your performance history as well as your score compare to the population average. I am happy to say that over the past eight years I have able to keep my performances in the top range without decline. Keeping up your mental capabilities certainly improves the quality of life in your old age. The WWW has several such exercise sites with low or no fees. The one I use is named Lumosity.com for $6.98 per month. But other sites such as the one operated by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) exist. I definitely recommend older person such as me to use them. I also welcome account of other personal experiences on this kind of exercises from readers in other countries.


Note added 12/26/2018: I discovered in one of the new insights offered by Lumosity on personal profiles that the most suitable profession for me based on my performance in different dimensions is ENGINEERING. This lends additional credibility to the site!


Note added 3/11/2019: For the past two weeks I was able to achieve new total  record scores twice on this exericse website. Certainly makes we feel good at my age.
