17.2 长词和短词----拉丁语和盎格鲁撒克逊语

Erg（博主：尔格是功的单位）来自希腊语的ergon（功），由这个词导出了energy。

Dyne（达因）来自希腊语的dynamis，意为power。

Endless与interminable同义，但一短一长。

林肯在盖底斯堡演说中，用four score and seven years ago这样的表达，是为了通过将词组拉长来烘托肃穆的气氛。另外，four score还能使人联想到圣经中的成语。

17.3俚语

俚语经常是筋骨棱棱的。

Sophist,修辞学教师，希腊语的sphia表示“智慧”。

Ahell of time，该词组本义是强调燃烧之历久。

Ahell of a time，则只强调燃烧。

Supercilious（傲慢的）来自拉丁语，本来是眉毛的意思，大概因为在骂人的时候，人往往扬起眉毛。

第18章 Purism（纯粹主义）

Marry指给女子一个丈夫（mari是法语的丈夫）.

Parent来自拉丁语parere, to bring forth（生孩子）。

Primipare则是“初产妇”的意思。

18.3What “gets” begets

不错，日历是时间在空间里的表现，钟表的指针则代表一种空间，时间似乎在指针上运动。

Space这个词与梵文的spahy有亲缘关系，而spahy则与speed有关，关涉时间。
