Cover Silicon is anattractive material for anodes in next-generation Li batteries, because itpossesses ten times the theoretical capacity of the state-of-the-artcarbonaceous counterpart. The cover illustrates the five generations ofnanostructured Si anodes developed in Yi Cui’s laboratory: nanowires,core-shell nanowires, hollow nanospheres, double-walled nanotubes, andyolk-shell nanoparticles. These nanoscale structure designs have increased thecapacity, prolonged the cycle life, and enhanced the Coulombic efficiency, bypreventing fracture of Si, and stabilizing its interface with electrolyte. For more details, please refer to the article “Nanomaterialsfor electrochemical energy storage” by Nian Liu, et al., pp 323–350.
