Auld Lang Syne（中文译名：《友谊地久天长》）原是苏格兰民间歌曲。十八世纪时，苏格兰诗人罗伯特·彭斯(Robert Burns)（1759-1796）根据当地一位老人的吟唱记录下了歌词。在很多西方国家，这首歌通常会在除夕夜演唱，象征送走旧年而迎接新年的来临，它的主调并没有中文版本那样感伤，而这首歌在很多亚洲地区中的学校毕业礼或葬礼中作为主题曲，象征告别或结束的情感。 该曲也是《魂断蓝桥》《Its.A.Wonderful.Life》中的经典歌曲。韩国国歌《爱国歌》曾借用此曲。爱国歌

“蛍の光”的原曲来自苏格兰民歌“Auld Lang Syne”。“Auld Lang Syne”为苏格兰语，在翻译成英语时，可直译为“old long since”，意译为“times gone by”。日语可以翻译为“久しき昔”等。 “蛍の光”的作词者为稻垣千颖。在作词时，曲名为“萤”，后来改为“萤の光”。根据当用汉字的使用规定，在正书法下，曲名为“蛍の光”。“蛍の光”在诞生之后，一直被定为学校教唱的“唱歌”。在日本学校的毕业典礼上，经常唱“蛍の光”。另外，还用于宴会、圣诞节等场合。1964年东京奥运会的闭幕式上，通过大合唱齐唱“蛍の光”结束了奥运盛典。现在，红白歌会的结束曲就是“蛍の光”。

杉の戸 is a wooden sliding door; it implicates a poor person's house who has worked hard under a very tough condition. As in, he/she has been studying with "light" of firebugs in summer and snow in winter, meaning he/she could not afford a lamp (or its oil). (It is from ancient Chinese texts, 蛍雪の功 晋書(車胤伝))。 寒门？
